Help your children write to the President this Presidents' Day

February 19, 2018

Presidents’ Day is here. How can we truly honor two of our greatest American presidents? It’s hard to imagine that they would want us to rush out and buy a mattress in their memory. Although there’s a high probability that either one, given the option, would appreciate a good night’s rest on a tempur-pedic memory foam or a sleep number bed.

It’s easier to imagine them urging us to take our responsibilities as citizens seriously and making sure that we’re holding our elected officials, especially our president accountable for his behavior.

So let’s do it!  Teach your children an important civics lesson. Sit down with them on Presidents’ Day and help them to write a letter to President Trump. Have each child send him a letter to tell him what they care about and what they want our president to do about it. They can even send an email AND a letter. Why don’t we FLOOD the White House with messages to our president to let him know that our children care about our country and understand that our president answers to “we the people?”  Oh, and when you send your letter and add your return address to the envelope, put the big issues on your mind on the outside of the envelope too. If you want to, share a copy of your child’s letter with us on our Facebook page: http://bit.ly/2EQLV4s We’d love to see it!

Teens might want to do this and tweet as well. Imagine teen tweeters or snap chatters all over the country on Presidents’ Day expressing their thoughts about the things that matter to them most and what they expect the leader of our country to do about them. Many of them will be voters in the next presidential election.  We should never forget the power that children have to effect change in our country.

How to write a letter to the President

Here are a few simple things you can do to make sure your message gets to the White House as quickly as possible:

  • If possible, email us! This is the fastest way to get your message to President Trump.

  • If you write a letter, please consider typing it on an 8 1/2 by 11 inch sheet of paper. If you hand-write your letter, please consider using pen and writing as neatly as possible.

  • Please include your return address on your letter as well as your envelope. If you have an email address, please consider including that as well.

  • And finally, be sure to include the full address of the White House to make sure your message gets to us as quickly and directly as possible:

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
